Fr Rhatigan strikes a blow for Rome

On February 28 1879 a desperate row erupted on peaceful Omey Island, near Cleggan, Connemara. The local curate Fr William Rhatigan burst into the local Protestant schoolhouse, run by the Irish Church Mission Society, saying he was ‘in search of his straying sheep’*. An argument broke out between him and the Rev William Lindsey MacNeice, the schoolmaster. Blows were struck. Who struck the first blow will forever be in dispute. But the evidence of Fr Rhatigan’s temper and strength is testified by the fact that it took the combined efforts of MacNeice, aided by his wife, his daughter Charlotte, his young son John Frederick, and two teachers from Claddaghduff, Messrs Davis and Coursey, to force him backwards out of the schoolhouse.

Let’s look forward with hope and optimism

2009 wasn’t a great year for most. Dole queues lengthened. People who never dreamed they would become a statistic joined the live register. Month in, month out, we reported increases in unemployment citing stats and figures. But what we must remember is you aren’t a statistic. You are so much more than that. You have contributed to Ireland’s reputation as a highly skilled nation. Gone is the tiger, but your worth and your importance are what must be cherished and reinvested in next year.

Kerry court scenes send out dangerous signal – Ruane

Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane has said that the scenes in the Circuit Criminal Court in Tralee last week, which have outraged people across the country, underline the need for reform of procedures in the courts service. A large group of people, mostly middle-aged and elderly men, queued up inside the court last Wednesday to shake hands with a man convicted of sexual assault against a 22-year-old woman. They had to pass by the victim as they showed solidarity with the perpetrator.
